Writers Workshop
In Writers Workshop we are beginning the genre of Author Study.  In grade 4 we will be studying Chris Van Allsburg.

An author study is a series of lessons that help students develop an understanding of an author and his or or her work.  The study guides students' understanding and thinking in response to the literature.  Students analyze the literary elements of the text, learn about story structures, and form opinions or theories about the author's work.  They support these opinions or theories with evidence from the text.

Please check out Chris Van Allsburg's website:  www.chrisvanallsburg.com

Readers Workshop
In the area of Readers Workshop, we will be reading books written by the author;  Chris Van Allsburg.

Guided Reading Groups are in full gear!!  Ask your child what level he or she is currently reading at.  Grade 4 students should be reading on level R using the Fountas and Pinnel reading system.  A good way to know what level the book is that your child is reading is to use the Book Wizard website available at www.scholastic.com.  You will need to click on Guided Reading Level and type in the title of the book.  Not all books are on this website.  Your child will be responsible for 3 jobs during the Readers Workshop work period.  Please ask your child what book they are reading during independent reading .

Science
We will begin our unit on the Water Cycle.  Students will learn about the water cycle and how all living things are dependent upon water.

Social Studies
Ms. Beauparlant is your child's Social Studies teacher. jbeauparlant@mansd.org

Everyday Math
Unit 9:  Fractions, Decimals, and Percents
In Unit 9 , we will be studying percents and their uses in everyday situations.  Your child should begin finding examples of percents in newspapers and magazines, on food packages, on clothing labels, and so on.

As we study percents, your child will learn equivalent values for percents, fractions, and decimals.  For example, 50% is equivalent to the fraction 1/2 and to the decimal 0.5.  The class will develop the understanding that percent always refers to a part out of 100.

Please continue to help your child at home to memorize basic multiplication and division facts as well as to complete all homework assignments.
